| Mica, you didn't mention whether your fig is in the ground or in a pot. Generally, figs are pretty easy to keep. They actually do better if they aren't heavily fertilized. I try to keep mine potted in an adequate but not over sized pot. I use (basically) the same media mix that I use for citrus and other tropicals. Mine benefit from a winter nap... For those grown in containers..keep them moist but not soggy. If they are allowed to get really dry with leaves and fruit on them..they'll likely drop either or both. With regards to growing in the ground, I can' say 'cause I can't do it here in Colorado. Some cultivars are said to be hardy as far north as Chicago but I'd guess they'd need a micro-climate, protection or both. Sometimes, those (smaller ones) growing in the ground, are bent over and banked with soil, over winter. I suppose the same guidelines for moisture and fertlization would apply to those in the ground as those in pots. |

| Regular discreet fertilizing of figs is necessary for potted trees or when they are grown on sands. Excess nitrogen encourages rank growth at the expense of fruit production, and the fruit that is produced often ripens improperly, if at all. For trees planted in the ground fertilize if the branches grew less than a foot the previous year. For in ground trees apply a total of 1/2 - 1 pound of actual nitrogen, divided into three or four applications beginning in late winter or early spring and ending in July. Further, monitor the tree's watering, if a fig is not getting enough water, the leaves will turn yellow and drop. Last edited by Newton : 07-29-2007 at 12:18 PM. |
