Default A good tasy white fig

Hi Bass,

A while back I wrote and asked if you would be releasing any of your white figs for sale. I believe you said you may have some in a month or so. I am looking for a good tasky white fig as I currently have a couple good darker ones. How do I go about getting one of your Brooklyn Whites?

Thanks

Which types of figs are you growing? When I lived in SW NJ, the white fig was the only type grown.

Hi Turtile,

I am currenlty growing VDB, Sal's, petite Negri and 2 un-named, (1 is probably Brown Turkey and the other hasn't fruited yet, but may be a white and is from a friend in North Jersey ). I'm not in Jersey, I'm in SE PA. All of these have been grown in pots, but I just planted my Sal's out in the ground this year. Do you have the names of any of the figs from your area?

I haven't tried any the varieties you mentioned. I have no clue about the exact variety of the white fig. All that I know is that it came from Italy. Around here in coastal DE, there are Brown Turkeys.

It seems there are brown Turkeys everywhere!! As I understand it, quite a few Italian families managed to bring a start of the family fig tree with them when they immigrated to the states. I wonder how many are really different and not the same fig with a different name. Anyway, I am still looking and feeling like I may settle for a Peter's Honey. That one is pretty common, but supposed to be good tasting. Anyone gorw that??

peter's Honey ripens very late for our region here in the northeast. I'm not a big fan of Brown Turkey, to me it has a mediocre flavor. Among the best white figs in my opinion are Brooklyn white, LSU gold, and Italian Honey gold.

I finally found a fig plant locally and at a great price. I only paid $1 and its about 8 inches tall. Its a rooted cutting from a mature tree so I should be able to taste my first fresh fig in a year or so. I think its a brown turkey fig but since I have never tasted a fresh one, even mediocre will be a new experience.

I don't like brown turkey much either. They are definitely the most cultivated fig in the area. Most of the figs from Italy are likely cutlings from a few original plants which makes most many of the current plants clones of the original. I wonder how much variation we would find if we propagated them from seed.

Hi folks, I am happy to report that I obtained several fig varieties from several sources this year. Among them was a Brooklyn White from Bass and it is doing very well. I noticed small figs forming on it a few days ago. I also got a Dark Portuguese from Bass and it has figs on it too, They started growing a while back and are getting pretty big now. He really knows his figs!! Thanks again Bass!! Those along with figs on my Sal's which I've had now for over a year will be my first home growns in a number of years (except 2 that the squirrels got before me last year)

I'm happy that they're doing well for you. The 3 types of figs you've mentioned are my 3 favorite figs.
I'll be picking main crop off of my fig trees within 2 weeks. I did an inventory yesterday and I now have 79 varieties. I went really crazy with figs.
