Welcome Mark! You mention that you would like a palm with a decent trunk for a large container, the one that I like for that purpose is Phoenix Roebelenii also known as pygmy date palm. I have mine for about 7 years now and it flowered last year for the 1st time. It has 4 trunks, the largest of which 12 inches tall. The plant is still in it's original nursery container (my bad) and would be larger if I had potted it up to a larger size pot. I plan on doing so this summer.

Smile Thanks MUCH!

Citrus, Gosh I thought I answered you, and then clicked to post and it seems to have disappeared. Thanks so much for your insight and suggestions! I have looked into your recommendation and for now, sounds a bit pricey to get it up to me. I so wish things like this could be more easily attained up here,(this far North) but just about the only thing up here even remotely similar is an occaisonal shipment of Majesty palms, which both I and another poster addressed earlier.
I greatly appreciate your time and your willingness to share your insight.

BTY, IF anyone does not receive a response from me within a few hours (at least a thank you!) it is because I have been having some real problems accessing the site more often than not. Perhaps a computer thing or something...I do not know. Just know that I attempt to answer in a timely manner (the very least I can do) and IF I HAVEN'T I am likely having difficulty "getting back."
The admin guy has been quite patient and helpful tho so that is NOT A "SHOT" @ this site. I have a couple of things referencing soil mixes, and water I want to throw out time permitting for discussion in the next couple of days, for "brain-picking."
Thanks again to any who have written!

Hey Mark, glad to hear from you. I got my pygmy date palm locally either in Home Depot or a local garden chain store for about $15 or less cause I like bargains. Here are some current pictures of it.

That didn't come out like planned. I wanted the pictures to show up in the post. Guess I'll try again.

Smile Wow Citrus!!!!

Dear Cit,

Looks to me as though you have a dandy palm there, not to mention an unreal price. Before I re-responded to your post and pics I decided to go out "scouting" to see the lay of the land regarding the possibility of such a specimen around here. I went to 4 greenhouses, a Home Depot, Lowes, and did find one quite similar in appearance (of course the ALWAYS OVERLY HELPFUL tag from the grower called it a "PALM product." Unfortunately, the price was $50. with no "wiggle room" as I call it. I highly doubt he will be able to generate sufficient interest to get it sold up here so perhaps later in the season, he may get a bit more amenable to my attempted offers. Anyway, I would have TOTALLY LEAPED on it if it were even $20, but right now I am not very "flush" to say the least! I do LOVE yours....it is the kind that I drool over! Thanks for answering & sharing! I appreciate hearing from you or any others who write! Sort of makes my day even!
Mark

Mark, when I purchased my palm, a few different nurseries had them. I think that the huge distributing nurseries sell a lot of them at one time and then grow some more to sell in huge batches again. That has been my observation as I see them on the market on and off. Keep an eye out for them and soon you should find one. I've even seen them in supermarkets. At present I haven't seen any around here either, but I'm sure they're growing somewhere just waiting to come on the market again.

Mark, if you're still interested in the pygmy date palm (Phoenix roebelini) I found one for $10.95 in a 1 gallon pot plus $10 S&H at [Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...].
