I set my coffee out for some fresh air.. I set them too close to the front of the porch and they got sun burnt leaves a bit.. I have set them further away from the front of the porch so they will not get late morning sun.. last yr they did great getting minimal early am sun and full shade the rest of the day.. They should bounce back quickly enough... Just a reminder NOT to set stuff where it might get sun burnt.. Gina *BabyBlue*

In most countries where coffee is grown commercially, the trees are grown in direct sun. In just a few countries, most notably Columbia , they are grown under the partial shade of tall trees. When grown in full sun the tree's growth is faster, stronger, fuller and with more berries than trees grown in shade. Coffee trees always produce a larger crop of beans when grown in full sun. Much more important than sun or shade to a healthy coffee tree is what temperature it is grown at. A coffee tree must be kept between the temperature of 60 to 77 degrees F. At temperatures above 77F the tree stops growing, and at temperatures at or above 86F the leaves become damaged, and if the temperature is not reduced or the tree moved to a cooler location the tree will die. Although coffee is grown in tropical countries such as Brazil and Columbia, it is grown at high elevations where the temperature remains moderate.

Newton..Interesting, at this time I have my coffee's in a low light area indoors which are doing great. I have several small coffees all growing under the same conditions. After reviewing your postings I will test a couple of them by moving them into the greenhouse.

At this time of year as the warm days of summer is approaching, greenhouse's can become quite hot. Be sure that the tree is not subject to temperatures above 77F if you desire growth, and absolutely not in the 80's. Coffee leaves easily burn to a crispy brown when the temperature become to great. If your tree has a history of growing in the shade, the tree will have to be acclimatized to the sun's rays, to avoid sun burn. My trees grow in full sun all day, until the summer temperatures become to high. Then I put them in a building under lights where the temperature can be controlled . As it is late spring the tree are presently loadedd with new coffee beans.

REQUIREMENT FOR GOOD COFFEE TREE GROWTH 1. ALTITUDE: 3000 to 6000 feet for best growth. Can grow at lower altitude but has greater bug infestation and diseases. 2. GERMINATION OF SEED: 5-6 weeks. Also Grows well from cuttings, and budding. 3. FERTILIZER: Fertilize with a 10-10-10 fertiliizer (or close) every two weeks from March through November. Once a month from December through February. 4. HUMIDITY: 90 percent. 5. pH: 6.5 - Too acid or too basic soil will kill the plant. 6. PRODUCTION: A 6-foot tree will produce between 2-4 pounds of coffee per year. 7. SOIL: Well draining. 8.TEMPERATURE: 65F to 77F Temperatues <50F or above 86F will distroy the tree. Temperature affects leaf color. Hotter the temperature the lighter green the leaf. The longer the periods of dark green leaves the healther the plant. 9. WATER: In nature trees require 75 inches of rain per year. Keep soil moist but not wet. 10. WIND: Coffee trees do not tolerate wind which dries out the leafs quickly causing brown/dead spots and burnt leaf margins. Last edited by Newton : 06-07-2007 at 11:34 AM.
