Default Avocados Trees at K-Mart

I have found a good buy. In my area K-Mart gets in citrus and Avocados in May.
I've been watching for a sale. So I got a $34.00 Avocado for $17.00.

Will that tree remain erect when the support stick is removed?

Terry I really love your fence! "I mean Avocado tree" That's a pretty good buy.

I've had one for a couple of years planted in a rather large container. It looked somewhat like the photo of yours above.

I finally cut in half and repotted it a smaller container and relocated it to a shaded area. This has been a few days ago. I"ve seen very evey little shock in the tree at this time.

Today I will add a bit move sand to the top of the container and water it in. I found they really like the sand mix.

Keep us up to date as I will do the same. Dale

Newton,
The main trunk doesn't need support. I haven't trimmed the side growth yet. They are spindly and would need support.
I thought I would use the side growth for budwood.

Default Avacodo in NC

Hi Terry
I saw your plant in a pot and I wondered if you can plant it in the ground. I planted my largest seeding in the ground after the freeze. My son had a seeding on a pot and left out in the below freezing. Still doing OK. I've been looking for you grafting photos..So far no luck. The sun is out and I'm going to chop off some seeding citrus and GRAFT.
Betty.

Betty,
I don't know what zone your in. It sounds like you may be able to do it. I would protect it from the cold till it got some size to it.
The Mexicola and the Mexicola Grande are cold hardy for a avocado. Maybe down to 18 deg.
Bass told me about a Opal Avocado from Texas that survived 14 deg night. I'm hoping to find some budwood or a tree. I also want some Opal or Mexicola seeds to use as rootstock. You don't know what you're going to get if you grow an Avocados grown from seed. Besides worrying about taste, for me, I want the most cold hardy I can get.
Terry

Hi Terry,
I;m in zone 9. We did have a freeze this year. Before that I had salvia, begonias, mother-in-law tounge (spelling?) The cold got all them. We put my big avacodo on an unheated house. Took it out and planted in ground. Survived one cold night. Looks good. We planted another one in the ground before the cold.Ants build a mound . Looks bad, don't know if it is the ants or the cold.

Meanma...here are links to the three cleft grafting photos that I posted. I don't know how to show all three without posting them seperately. Sorry that I couldn't have made it smoother and easier. Hope this helps.
