Default In Ground Meyer Lemon - Victoria BC

First, thanks to Dale for setting up this new category.

As a life long lover of citrus fruits and a novice citrus grower, I'm both thrilled and surprised that it is possible to grow citrus fruits in the ground with minimal fuss this far north (48 degrees 25 minutes).

We're technically about 200 miles north of the acknowledged extreme northern range for world-wide Mediterranean climates in which citrus thrive, but here on the coast the weather is mild enough, with a bit of extra effort. More on my experiences with lemon growing to follow.

LeapFrog Glad to see you got your Avatar up. Look's great. I really don't want to hurt this forum buy doing this. But's I feel it's important to share information.

If your a forum runner you may have seen Mckenzie Farms mentioned. Stan deals with some very nice Cold Hardy Citrus. I don't know if he can send to Victoria BC.

But I'm sure you could call him and ask. Stan will offer you help also if you ask. Here is the Link [Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] Please come back to share your information,

I hope this will help you in the future. Take Care

Thanks for the link, Dale. And thanks for the welcome, Andi.

I would like to put in a cold hardy tangerine if I can create a little space in my Zone 9 micro climate against the southwest facing wall of the house (full sun). Maybe the ten degree tangerine.

I bought and planted my Meyer lemon in March 2006. So far I have picked 3 ripe lemons, features in my Avatar. There are about 20 more in various stages of ripening, and I'll be picking some more soon.

Here are some pictures that I don't think need any explanation, other than perhaps the heat generating and retention abilities of my cold weather set up. We had the coldest weather in 5 or 6 years in late November. The lowest temperature was -6 C. During the cold spell the temperature inside the mini greenhouse never dipped below +12 C.

Leapfrog,
Those are some great looking little trees. What type of greenhouse are you using?

Andi: I bought it over the Internet from an outfit called "FlowerHouse". They come in different shapes and sizes. As I have only a small tree, mine is the smallest (2 ft square), and without any insulation or heat it keeps the temperature inside about 2 C (4 F) warmer than the outside temperature.

Here's a link to their website:

Hi all! My name is Lois, I live in a southern community of Jacksonville, Florida, called Mandarin. This area of town was the hub of the citrus industry some 100 plus years ago. I am just so thrilled to be here and able to grow citrus as I am originally from the Carolinas and never could grow such things.

However, I went to a citrus workshop a couple of weeks ago and found out that there is root stock, Flying Dragon, that can comfortably survive up into the Carolinas without special protection. The trees do not get as big, but the fruit is delicious and comparable.
