The citrus fruit that is grafted on the Flying Dragon root stock makes for a smaller tree. For instance, a grapefruit tree which can easily grow over twenty feet will only get 8 feet tall at best on this root stock. The fruit will be just as tasty but about 3 - 5% smaller in size. I think that is comparable to the regular root stock fruit. However, this fruit can live up as high as into the Carolinas without needing special protection, in other words, in the ground.

Mandarin Farmer, Welcome to the forum and please forgive my confusion. I thought you were saying the flying dragon fruit was sweet and good tasting, similar to say an orange or other sweet fruit. I have always been under the impression that FD fruit is horrible. I did not realize you were speaking of the fruit of the bud stock grafted to the FD rootstock. Andi

The trees that grow on this root stock only get 6 to 8 feet tall, but can grow, without protection, in the ground as high as the Carolinas. The fruit is 3 - 5 % smaller than other root stock - so it is comparable, but smaller. The taste is just as good as with other root stock. It is just a zone buster root stock.

Leapfrog, I have been admiring your inground meyers and your winter protection. Excuse me if you gave an update elsewhere and I didn't see it, but how did it fair through the winter? Do you have any spring pictures? Thanks, Barbara

bastrees: Sorry for the delayed response. Yes, the tree survived the winter. We only had 2 cold spells, both times the temperature got to about -6 C, but the winter protection worked well. There was a lot of leafy growth this spring, but not many flowers. I count 7 lemons yesterday, and the tree is about 8 inches taller than last year. Here a re a few pictures from the early spring: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() __________________ leapfrog Victoria, BC

Thank you for the update and the pictures! I loved seeing your meyers in its winter digs, and was truly interested in how it came through the winter. I just got into citrus this spring, and my first purchase included a meyers lemon tree (some would say twig). I am confident it is a rooted cutting and it arrived about 6 inches tall. It is on it's second flush in my care, though, and has at least doubled its height and has added one branch besides. No where near as lush as yours but with great potential. It has also flowered once, and I see signs of another few (microscopic) buds starting. That is why I believe it is a rooted cutting, that and there is no sign of a graft. Thank you again, and happy gardening. Barbara
