Default success stories of citrus in northern zone 7 or lower

HI
Has anyone tried growing citrus ( cold hard) in the "northern" areas. Presummable this would be with lots of protection and with the cold hardy varieties?

thanks Frank

Frank, I posted sometime back under cold hardy citrus that a fellow in Colorado Springs, COLO (zone 5) reported overwintering citrus, with protection, and limited fruit production following. Stan (the Citrus man) in SC sent me a copy of the testimonial. Certainly certain choices would be more likely to be successful than others.

HI Joe, thanks Yes

I have actually been in contact with him. Very nice guy. He has had good luck with the Changsha mandarin, the Ichang lemon, and yuzu. After emailing him, it seem that not many people are going cold hardy citrus in zones 5 and 6 and i was wondering if anyone else has tried?

This won't help too much since it's a freak story really. My friend has a grocery store bought grapefruit tree in their backyard, it is going on it's 3rd summer. The way their house made it seems to create a micro ecosystem in their yard, cause they do little but a sheet over it in cold snaps (-20*C). The thing survives every year, and it should not!! A Mystery.

Here in Montreal Quebec, we are I believe 5a. Insane.

That however, no, but since it's a store bought grapefruit from seed, I guess that's totally normal. Too young yet. I don't think it would be able to support the fruit long enough to mature in our climate even under his conditions in my opinion even if it did fruit, it would have to be a novelty tree I guess. At least I believe so! Who knows with this guys' backyard! *Cues twilight zone music*

Could someone please direct me to info on growing Meyer Lemon tree in zone 5b-south central Indiana and where I could purchase a 3-5 year old tree? What type am I looking for also-root cutting stock or seed? Thanks in advance for any help.

Maybe the Meyer Lemon does well when planted in the ground but I personally will never try another one of those for container growing! Eureka, Bearss, etc better choice with more success for me.

Default Meyers in MN

You are way up there for growing lemon trees. I'm from Nisswa, MN which is another 2 hours plus north of you. My great uncle grew lemon trees very successfully in his basement and patio in Sioux City Iowa which is a ways south of you. I'm a 1,000 miles south of you and think Ican probably do it. I already grow 9 other varieties of fruit and would like to try Meyers. If it doesn't work, well nothing ventured nothing gained. I love the Meyers for use in my baking company. THey just add such a wonderful flavor without being too sour-tart.
Stillwaitingto hear fromsomeone who can tell me where to buy the right kind of stock:-)
