Default Yuzu fruit - Paw Paw question

Hi Gina,

If you get seedlings, do let me know. I will do like-wise. I agree that the drawback to seedlings is the lenght of time to fruit, but it is so wonderful to have fruit from a plant you grew from seed. Even sour fruit is bound to taste sweeter! Right Joe? There is the plus too of getting to see it growing. It is a pretty remarkable process all the way around. I wintersowed flower seeds last year, and got no end of pleasure from watching for the seeds to sprout and then monitoring their growth. It sure was a boon to my flower garden too. This year I am going to try a garden of baby vegetables if I can find all the seeds I want. Right now I'm looking for window box Roma tomatoes.

I do have an extra seedling of Meiwa Kumquat if you would like it . They are about a year and a half old but still pretty small as I have had them all planted together. If you let me know I could send it early spring. I don't want to disturb all the other roots in the pot right now with cold weather upon us.

I have some yellow watermelon seeds if you are interested.. I know they aren't veggie but they are interesting.. well.. the one I ate was.. I haven't tried to grow yet.. I saved all the seeds and split them with my mom and saved out some for trading..
Meiwa seedling would be cool.. I tried to start some last spring and they didn't make it.. I have 4 fruit on my tree right now!! LOL gonna be a BIG harvest next couple months!! LOL they are all green and about nickel sized.. maybe little smaller..
I'll let you know if I get any paw paw seedlings.. That will be cool since they are hardy to my zone..

Default Yuzu fruit - Paw Paw question

Hi Gina,

Thank you for the offer of the yellow watermelon, but I don't think I will have space to plant them. I received some sugar baby watermelon seeds in trade, but I'm not sure I have space in my small garden area for them either. It's just a 5x8 foot area.

I really appreciate the thought.

Default More about Yuzu's

Got an interesting e-mail from a citrus collector friend. Seems the Martha Stewart show contacted him. They are planning a session that will feature Yuzu..the new 'gee-whiz' plant that has lots of wonderful benefits. Anyway, I guess, they're having a little trouble finding fruits for use on the show. They contacted him looking for fruit, of which he has a few. So his question to me was: "would I like to donate to the cause"? Hummmmm?? For those of you that watch her show....let us know when or if they do put a spot-light on Yuzu's.

Default Yuzu fruit on Martha Stewart Show

Hi Joe,

Well, that should be interesting. Tell your friend to let you know when the Yuzu episode will be aired so we can plan to watch it. Don't watch that much tv, but would definitely try to catch that one. Maybe I will drop Martha a note and offer her my Yuzu pie adaptation. lol

Hope your snow is getting more manageable there.

I haven't watched Martha for yrs.. If you find out when it will show let us know.. I might watch it if I have time..
I for one was surprised by the yuzu taste.. I was braced for a nasty flavor (tried Tri fruit ONCE) and it was actually pleasant.. Do they always smell kinda like pine?? that is best I can describe it.. flavor cross between lemon hint of grapefruit... son said he tasted a bit of orangey taste.. I think my nose couldn't get past the pine smell and kept trying to taste pine.. lol
I think it is interesting flavor.. not bad to have house smelling pine fresh all day!!! I could almost see making a cleaning product from the oil of the skin.. lemon pine fresh scent!!
30+ seeds.. the + was 4 under developed seeds.. I threw them in the "community pot" youngest sons citrus menagerie.. no telling what all is in that pot.. he just sticks seeds in it all the time.. put the 30 seeds in peat pellets and placed them in a large Ziploc baggie as all my mini green houses are presently used.. we will see how well that works..

Default More about seeds....

Glad the Yuzu arrived OK and that you are/were pleased with your findings. A few posts back, you and Jean were visiting about cold exposure for certain seeds. Often, when I'm wanting to grow specific plants from seeds that are not sensitive to being frozen I simply plant them in a container of good soil mix and leave the container outside over winter. Freezing and thawing is part of a natural process of preparing some seeds to germinate. Another approach is stratification, keeping seeds in a media, inside a bag, inside a refrigerator, usually at about 40 degrees for 1-4 months. Outside, make sure that the container doesn't get too wet or too dry, standing water is not good for the seeds. Expose the container to both sun and shade and protect from squirrels or other critters that would feed on the seeds. Usually, in May, you'll see your results.

I have been keeping mine inside.. we have BAAAADD squirrel population here.. they enjoy my garden..
I have kept them in fridge since I think October or November.. I take them out and let them sit on the counter once a week for a day then stick them back in.. When I put them in peat pellets I warmed them up with warm water (about 85-90*f) for about an hr.. then put them in the pellets.. now to wait for signs of life and that I did it right..

Thanks again!!! I'll let you know how it goes..

Default Fruit for Martha

Well, I decided to go ahead and send the remaining Yuzu fruit to Martha. In an earlier post I mentioned that The Martha Stewart Show was looking for Yuzu to use in an upcoming tv segment. This is the last of them. Some of you emailed me and I sent some, I kept a few for myself. If I get any information about that particular show, I'll post it but I seriously doubt that I'll ever hear anything from them. Stay tuned. ps: I tried to post a picture here but couldn't. You can see "Martha's Yuzus" in my photos..
