sour orange | | Sour Oranges grow wild in the woods around here, and I have several that I have budded Satsuma onto. My only comment is that the trees budded onto sour orange get larger (not necessarily a good thing) than those budded onto Trifoliate, which I usually use. Trifoliate gives more cold hardiness, and it is of course easier to tell which new growth is rootstock and which is not because of the 3 leaves, so I prefer it. I lost several trees to the 10 degree freeze in 1989 but have re-grafted most of them, so do not have a ready source of sour orange fruit or seeds. So I cant help you much, unless you are looking for some of the wild sour oranges from the woods, and I cant tell you anything about their heritage, other than they escaped from the Spanish settlements at St. Augustine (60 miles east of here) in the 1600s. |
