| I have a friend with a large Trifoliate Orange Tree. It's a great tree for rootstock. It's not one of the large Trifoliate trees. It's an old tree but not over 15 or 16ft. tall. I'm able to get fruit from it to start my own rootstock. I would like to have my own tree that fruits. But that will take several years. So, here's my answer. I grafted a mature cutting from the mother tree to a seedling rootstock. This way I should get my own seeds in a couple of years. Terry [Only Registered Users Can See Links. | Yes, that should speed up the process. It's said that plants and plant parts remember their place. Meaning that a scion taken from areas that are mature enough to bloom and produce fruit will remember it's capability when it is grafted onto a new rootstock. I've seen it happen many times. The down side to this is that if a very small rootstock is used...it's possible for the tiny tree to try to produce fruit as if it were a larger, more mature tree...at least on the particular piece of grafted or budded wood. If that occurs you may have to implement some "tough love" and eliminate or reduce fruit buds to avoid heavy stress on the small, immature plant. Still, just one or two fruits can produce significant seeds for more rootstocks. __________________ Last edited by Citrus Joe : 07-14-2007 at 08:15 AM. Reason: typo |

| Normally scions when taken from a mature fruiting tree will produce fruit the second or third year. It is recommended that the fruit be removed for the first three years as all the energy will go to procucing fruit in stead of tree growth. |

| Here's what I was talking about in an earlier post. This grafted Buddha's Hand (done last year) is only about 15" tall with just a few leaves. The T bud is at the lower piece of guying tape. Still...as you can see it's trying to set fruit. This is a poor specimen but does illustrate my point. __________________ Last edited by Citrus Joe : 07-15-2007 at 09:46 PM. Reason: typo |
