Default Growing bananas in containers is easy!

Since there aren't a lot of posts on this part of the site, am I to assume that no one is growing bananas in containers? Especially with the tropical ones, it's so easy to do.
I have large containers of bananas sitting all over my yard, I like the fact that I can move them into the greenhouse when we're predicting high winds, which happens often here in Muncie, Indiana where I live.
I'm way too lazy to dig that many tropical bananas, when I can just pot them up in a good potting mix, fertilize the heck out of them and grow them quite well that way. besides, I like to underplant them with purple queen setacreasia, yellow alternanthera, petunias, variegated airplane/spider plants, etc, to dress them up.
I'll post a picture of the large ice cream banana sitting in my driveway "waiting area" where the non-plant lovers can hang out while the plant lovers go nuts buying tropical plants at the greenhouse. I need to take one first!
Sincerely,
Sandy Burrell

Default Bananas in containers Z6A, PA

I keep trying bananas. I am determined to grow them her in SW PA. I buy a basjoo every year. The first year I planted it in the ground and mulched well, but it didn't make it. Last year I planted it and a hi color cavendish in containers and brought them into my garage. They made it until Feb. then they died. The garage gets down to maybe 45 on the coldest nights. This year I hae again bought a basjoo and another unnamed (probably dwarf cavandish), I'm giving it another try. Any suggestions how to keep them over winter?
Roxanne

Default growing in containers

I've not had any luck with storing my bananas dormant, even though I know a man in town who has great success in storing them that way. I even got plants off him and tried it to his specifications, but to no avail.
The best way I've been able to keep them overwinter is to just bring them inside the greenhouse, keep them at a minimum of 50 degrees and not water them very much--only like once every three or four days depending on the weather conditions, more water if sunny and less if not sunny. They get kind of ugly but live just fine and by the time warm weather hits, they are beautiful again.
I've killed plants for the last four years trying to store them dormant and I've finally given up.
Sincerely
Sandy

Default Another grower

Sandy0225....I'm growing them too, year round, in the gh. My favorite is the Chinese Golden, 'tho it hasn't bloomed yet. It is approaching 5 feet.

I had 3 pups through winter in a south window.. Truly Tiny, Little Prince and a Mahoi.. I lost the Mahoi.. But the other two made it through with flying colors. I have since gotten a Cali Gold.. I will keep the Truly Tiny, Little Prince and CG all potted till next spring when I hope they will be big enough I will Transplant them in ground and hopefully get fruit the following summer.. If this works well.. any pups I get I will treat the same.. might take more than one yr in pots if they don't get enough growth on them this yr.. I will keep them Inside during the winter in south window area..
