SiliconMage, The best nanner I ever got was a sick looking nanner from a seed catalog grown indoors year round in a container. On the floor facing the east in front of a bay window. After about 4 years it choked. Been hooked ever since thats ten years ago.

I did get a nanner from WalMart about four years ago unknown which is still going indoors only. The best thing about growing nanners in a cold zone is that you can dig the up in the fall and replant in the spring. I once had a video on the old CN SMF site showing the how to's. I did test this and it worked great. It's a lot a fun growing nanners the foliage is so pretty the friut would be a plus,

The reason I chose this one was because it is said to grow well in cooler clements. We never get any interesting items from our stores. I always have to mail order.

I choose the Dwarf Orinoco for the same reason. This is my 2nd test with this nanner. The frist one went 2 years, the first year I dug it from being outside up and placed it in a cool spot in the basement. I took it back up in Feb.of the 2nd year and placed it in a container indoors until spring, planting next the house on the 2nd year. Using a lot of CHC and peat at the time. The nanner never did well using this inground mix and failed in Sept. of that year. It did prove to be very hardy. Maybe we can test on what works. I like testing and work at different ways and means each year. Sometimes it a new tree or plant sometimes it's the same using different means. It all depends on what I like I very selldom give up. Although Meyers Lemons is beating me.

I will take you up on this test, perhaps. I have expanded my budget so I can get a few plants this year, but space is another matter.

This is a photo of 2 Dwarf Orinocos that I got from GreenEarth Inc. This past week. I just potted them up in 6 inch containers using Miracle-Gro Potting Mix. (Notice how dry the soil mix is). The reason being is that the soil mix that they came in was already pretty wet, I'll wait a while before watering, I plan to plant these outdoors in the block retaining wall planter boxes that we installed last year.

Well, the plant I ordered is already 3 gal. in size. I'll take delivery after our last frost date. I was going to pot into some Happy Frog or Ocean Forrest since I can now get specialty mixes at our local hydroponics store. I may have to move in there, since they have so many interesting items. I'll be checking up on bananas now that I have bit the bullet. Please keep that gallery updated I need a reference to make sure I am not going too far into left field.

orchidandplantlady, I got my 2nd one from Logges, This one is going into the 2nd year. The first falled with the first year. I feel the failure was caused by over watering in the low temps that we have, and root rot took over the first one.

The one I got from Logges that is going on the 2nd year is still very small but is pupping out. It is planted in a 6" container. The first year I had this nanner is used a CHC and peat soil mix. Thinking that using this mix would help in preventing the root rot. as it did. the problem is the nanner did not do well in this mix, even feeding with 15-5-30 water soluble ferts.

I did repot the nanner in a Miracle-Gro potting mix which has had a great improvement to it's growth and greening of the leaves.

At this time I would like to suggest using Miacle-Gro potting mix, But go easy on the water and let it dry a bit much like citrus. I like testing and this has been my testing in the past. I hope you can help us along with any findings or information that you may come across. Please keep us up to date.

I am going the pot route. I can not risk any fusarium wilt in my bananas. It is common in our areas and lives in the soil, and bananas are sensitive to it. Have you seen any of this in your area?
